Completed Projects 2014 0nwards - The industries are now taking interest in design and development of innovative product based on the consultancy offered to them.The facility of developing the complete product using rapid prototyping and casting is developed by the applicant in the department at VNIT

1 Research facility to design and develop customized medical implant is developed as as impact of Contribution in design and development of customised joint in medical and dental science

  • The metatarsophalangeal joint is designed and manufactured in house. The surgeons are made aware of this technique and many of them are encouraged to take complicated cases for surgery. The work is accepted for publication in the international journal
  • Research project on development of customised orthopaedic joints viz. Hip and knee joint is in progress. The complete facility of development of the implants right from design to testing is established in house. The main focus is on development of cost effective metallic implant and finally implant made of bone using tissue engineering. The work will go long way in making available affordable implants to people in the developing country like India.
  • The patient specific temperomandibular joint is designed and manufactured in house. The medical professionals can now handle complicated cases using the process developed which covers clay modelling and reverse engineering. The technical paper is published in the international journal of repute on the said work.
2 Research facility is established to get RP based medical model for mock surgery and education

  • The complicated surgeries like acetabulum fracture correction and scoliosis (disease related to vertebral column) are successfully handled using RP based medical models. The surgeons are educated to carry out mock surgery on RP part which helps them to reduce surgery time. The patients get benefitted as post operative complications are less. There is strong possibility of international academic linkage in this field as case of scoliosis is handled at NottinghamUniversity UK based on RP model built at VNIT Nagpur, India.

 

  • The RP based medical models help doctors to understand the medical image like CT scan/MRI and hence served as diagnostic tool.

 

  • The effective and fruitful communication between doctors and patient is thus made possible improving the relation with the doctor.
3 Research facility in the field of tissue engineering

  • Research in development of customised metallic medical implant for joints viz. Hip and knee joint is in progress. The complete process from design to manufacturing and finally testing of customised implant is established at VNIT Nagpur. The advance research in tissue engineering for development of implant made of bone is in offing. The students are taking interest in the research in tissue engineering. The R & D proposal in tissue engineering costing 39.39 crores is already approved in collaboration with IIT Mumbai and Govt. Engineering College Pune by Rajiv Gandhi Science and Technology Commission Govt. Of Maharashtra Mumbai.

 

4 Research facility in the Bionics as newer field of research to U.G. and P.G. students

  • For U.G. /P.G. students, conceptualisation stage in the design is taught by introducing Bionics as newer field .The students are taught how to get inspired by biological system to design innovative product. The visit to nearby national parks are also regularly conducted for the students which helps them to understand biological system

 

5 Design and Introduction of new courses and laboratories at VNIT  

Purpose : Industry orientation for U.G. and P.G. students

Course Titles :

  • Product design and development (PDD)
  • Computer data base management system (CDBM) with separate practical course
  • Computer aided design (CAD) with separate practical course
  • Layered manufacturing with separate practical course

Coverage areas:

  • PDD: Techniques for designing innovative products using tools of TRIZ and Bionics. Knowledge of additive manufacturing and patenting is imparted.
  • CDBM: Database management in industries other than service industries. Students are encouraged to develop decision support system for effective planning of resources in industries. The focus is on mechanical engineering oriented industries of developing country like India as resources planning plays dominant role in such industries in global competition.
  • CAD: Course is aimed at the students of mechanical/industrial engineering and focuses on use of computer as tool in design of product. The students are exposed to areas like computer graphics, finite element method, design optimisation. The course enables student to develop specific software which can meet niche needs and avoid use of high priced software products.
  • Layered Manufacturing: This course helps to

i)              Understand the current available layered manufacturing systems, their operating principles and their characteristics.

ii)             Describe complementary, secondary fabrication processes

iii)            Select the appropriate fabrication technology or technologies for a given task.
